Max was a loner, never married and had no family in the United States. He lived in a small apartment and worked at a bookstore. Max was a quiet man, but he was also a very kind man. He would always go out of his way to help others, and he was always willing to lend a listening ear. One day, Max was walking home from work when he saw a young woman struggling to carry a heavy box. He immediately went over to her and offered to help. The young woman was grateful for his help, and she and Max began to talk. As they talked, Max learned that the young woman had just moved to New York City from Germany, and that she was struggling to find a job.
